Fearless Frank is still learning fast

GOAL: West Ham striker Frank Nouble unleashes a superb shot for his second.
WEST HAM youngster Frank Nouble succeeded where the England senior strikers failed so miserably at the World Cup as he grabbed two goals in the under-19s opening match in the European Championships in France, on Sunday.

The 18-year-old striker, who made 10 appearances in claret and blue, before loan spells at both West Brom and Swindon Town, was in imperious form early on in the clash against Austria in Flers.

He fired England into the lead on 13 minutes when hesitation in the Austrian defence allowed him to fire home left-footed, but he was even more destructive on the half hour mark.

A long ball forward by Matthew Briggs, saw the former Chelsea trainee muscle away from his marker to the left edge of the area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot which flew past the keeper and into the net to make it 2-0.

England did have a few scares when Austria pulled the score back to 2-1 and then 3-2 in the second half, but the team did enough to secure the win.

Nouble was delighted with his double strike, "I knew the day before that I was going to start," he revealed.

"It was just about focusing and getting right for such a big game. I was pleased to get the goals and hopefully I can do it again."

The young striker is looking for the tournament to kick-start his career with West Ham.

"I am happy because, when I come back to West Ham, I want to show that this experience will help me be a better player. I want to get more chances to show what I can do."

Nouble will hope for more of the same when England face their final group game against hosts France in St-Lo on Saturday as they bid for a place in the semi-finals.

The match will kick off at 5pm and will be screened live by Eurosport.
